CHAIN - LIVE CHAIN * Price: $24.95
With the line-up of Phil Manning (guitar, vocals), Warren Morgan (electric piano), Glyn Mason (guitar, vocals), Barry 'Big Goose' Sullivan (bass) and Barry 'Little Goose' (drums), 'Live Chain' is a terrific document of this short-lived version of the band (both Morgan & Mason had left by the LPs release). The album was recorded live to two-track at Caesar's Palace, Sydney on July 1970 for $32.00. For those who are only familiar with Chain via their 1971 breakthrough album 'Toward The Blues', they may be surprised at how progressive this album is - a sound not too dissimilar to Blind Faith - with an added twin guitar attack. It is still rooted in the blues, with some awesome extended soloing, but some of Morgan's piano is decidedly funky, whilst the riff-tastic 'Pilgrimage' would not sound out of place on Kahvas Jute's 'Wide Open'. Added to the deluxe reissue is a track left off the original, probably due to time constraints : 'On The Road Again' plus their very first single from 1969; 'Show Me Home'/ 'Mr. Time?. The line-up was Manning, Morgan and Harvey with Claude Papesch (organ) and Tim Piper (bass). Morgan and Papesch's piano/organ interplay was reminiscent of The Band, while 'Mr. Time' is positively psychedelic! / The World Is Waiting * Black And White * Pilgrimage * Gertrude Street Blues * Chaser

VARIOUS - BIG BEAT CELLAR SCENE * Price: $29.95
Compiled by Nick G for NICKOFF REC ORDS, a limited run of 1000 copies, each one individually numbered/ During the sixties Adelaide had a thriving music scene. Once used inner city basements and cellars became dark, hot, noisy and smoky clubs and discos. Venues like Alan Hale's BEAT BASEMENT, THE SCENE, Alex Innocenti's THE CELLAR and Jim Popoff's BIG DADDY'S filld with teen-agers to hear discs spun by local DJs and local groups pounding out R&B and hits of the day. Bands like the Masters Apprentices, Blues Rags'n Hollers, Southern Gentlemen, Dust'n Ashes, Blues Syndicate, The Vikings/Why 4, The Others, Sounds Of Silence, The Bentbeaks, The Third Party, The Chosen Few, The Harts, Syssys, The Hergs, D-Coys, Inkase, James Taylor Move, The Bucket, Five Sided Circle and many others made their presence felt. Some were lucky enough to release one or maybe two 45s at best, however the emergence of a number of independant recording facilities enables many more to record demos and tracks to mime to on local TV music shows like ACTION or IN TIME. This is what we have here, hidden away for over 40 years, the fruits of that youthful energy hopefully getting some recognition, not afforded them at the time. (SEE MORE / BUY)

AUTUMN - COMES AUTUMN * Price: $24.95
Although Autumn began as a bubblegum band in the late-60's,the early-70's found them, after various line-up changes, a markedly different band. With lush harmonies, Beatlesque arrangements and a great batch of songs that ranged from breezy pop to progressive rock (as well as the the seven minute orchestral extravaganza: 'Kill My World'), 'Comes Autumn' showed a mature and accomplished band that belied both their age and their beginnings. Features the singles 'Falling', and 'Goblin's Gamble' plus 5 bonus tracks: including the rare final single 'Just Couldn't Believe It', a spirited cover of The Beatles' 'Day Tripper' and previously unreleased demos.Deluxe reissue is packaged in a 6 panel digi-pak. It has been remastered by Gil Matthews. Liner notes from Ted Lethborg featuring quotes from a recent interview with lead singer Tony Romeril and a 24 page booklet filled with rare photos, posters etc.

TULLY - LIVE AT SYDNEY TOWN HALL 1969/70 * Price: $24.95
Tully became a draw card for their willingness to experiment with improvisation, light shows, non-western musical influences and re-interpretations of jazz, folk and classical motifs. The band formed in 1968 from the remnants of an R&B covers band, wider recognition came soon though, only a year later they were the house band for the new counter-culture musical 'Hair'. This first incarnation of Tully were wild, expansive and unpredictable. The band employed extended improvisation, spacious dynamics and an intuitive intensity. Chapter Music presents two rare live recordings, including their 1970 performance of Australia?s first ever rock opera. Peter Sculthorpe wrote the first of the two tracks here, 'Love 200', specifically with Tully and vocalist Jeannie Lewis in mind. The work was based around the theme of the 200th anniversary of Captain Cook?s landing in Australia, to observe the transit of the planet Venus. 'Sights & Sounds Of 69' captures Tully in full improvisational flight at the Sydney Town Hall. Over its 32 minutes, a multitude of ideas are pitched back and forth between musicians Terry Wilson (vocals), Michael Carlos (organ), Robert Taylor (drums), Ken Firth (bass) and Richard Lockwood (reeds).

BLACKFEATHER - BOPPIN' THE BLUES * Price: $24.95
The 1972 live album, augmented with 4 bonus tracks, including 'Boppin' The Blues' and 'Slippin' and Slidin'. One of the most enduring Aussie hits of the 70s is Blackfeather's number one single, 'Boppin' The Blues' (September 1972 ). Blackfeather's timeless hit was also the name of their second album. However, the LP was a actually hastily recorded live album, made to cash in on their recent hit and for the many people who bought the LP, most were disappointed that the album version of 'Boppin The Blues' was not the same one that had dominated the charts (having said that, the album is actually a fine representation of Blackfeather MK2, with the unusual line-up of bass, drums, vocals & upright piano). Aztec have rectified that! Not only does the remastering (by Gil Matthews) improve on the original album's hollow sound, the original hit single version of 'Boppin' the blues' & the excellent follow up 'Slippin And Slidin' have been added, as bonus tracks. Interestingly, Matthews actually played on the hit single version (as a session drummer). Deluxe 6 panel digi-pak, 24 page booklet with many rare photos and a recent interview with vocalist Neale Johns. Liner notes by noted Australian music writer Ian MacFarlane.

THE BREAK - CHURCH OF THE OPEN SKY * Price: $29.95
Midnight Oil's Rob Hirst, Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey have joined with bass player Brian Ritchie of US group Violent Femmes to form a new surf rock band called THE BREAK. The debut album, CHURCH OF THE OPEN SKY is to be released on Friday April 16th on the Bombora label through MGM. The album is a unique blend of pulsating psycho surf rock tunes, featuring 15 mostly instrumental tracks, the bulk of which are named after legendary surf breaks. 'Cylinders', the first single from the album, was in fact one of the first tracks created. World renowned producer Nick Launay (Midnight Oil, Silverchair, Nick Cave and PiL) took 'Cylinders' to the mixing desk in a Los Angeles studio to create a sound highlighting the driving guitars and a pounding back beat, synonymous with both the surf rock genre and the classic Oils sound. So how did THE BREAK come about? After the Sound Relief benefit gig in Melbourne last year Hirst, Moginie and Rotsey finally got together in the studio with the aim of forming a new band with a new identity. Both Midnight Oil and Violent Femmes have surfing influences - The Oils began their career on Sydney's Northern Beaches in the sweat filled environs of the Narrabeen Antler whilst the Femmes, though famous for hits like 'Blister in the Sun', often flavoured their individual folk-punk sound with surf-rock guitar.

HOODOO GURUS - PURITY OF ESSENCE * Price: $29.95
A jam session at a Sydney rehearsal studio in 2009 produced eight songs and set the template for the Guru's ninth studio record. All four band members were pole-axed by the lightning bolt moments which brought Faulkner's songs to life from his demos. Even the songwriter himself says there must have been some rock'n'roll magic at work when 'Crackin' Up' arrived almost fully formed in a dream. The serendipity continued when the frontman brought the song to the band. During that day, there were so many songs and sounds coming out that we'd never done before. They had the classic Gurus feel but it was different, even though we weren't pushing ourselves to do something different. This CD is a cracking return to form, as hard & rocking as they've ever been. DVD content of 4 classic songs handpicked by the band from Live from St Kilda filmed for Max TV a few years ago + interview footage. / Disc 1 /CD - Crackin' Up * A Few Home Truths * Are You Sleeping? * Burnt Orange * I Hope You're Happy * Ashamed Of Me * What's In It For Me? * Over Nothing * You've Got Another Thing Coming * Only In America * Somebody Take Me Home * Let Me In * Evening Shade * Why So Sad? * 1968 * The Stars Look Down * Disc 2/ DVD Live from St Kilda - Bittersweet * Come Anytime * 1000 Miles Away * I Was A Kamikaze Pilot

DINGOES - TRACKS * Price: $24.95
The Dingoes are often given credit for that point in Australian music history where Australian rock shook off its cultural cringe and placed all the influences which had shaped the music to date into an Australian setting. The group's music was clearly steeped in the American traditions of blues and country but the sound of Broderick Smith's voice and the songs themselves left no mistake where the music eminated from. Even the band's name said it. In the end however it was the quality of the songs and the musicianship which set the Dingoes apart, and made them one of the truly legendary groups of Australian music. The Dingoes debut single, 'Way Out West', was released in November 1973, and peaked in the top 40 of the Australian Kent Music Report singles chart. They had three top 40 albums, The Dingoes in 1974, Fives Times the Sun in 1977 and Orphans of the Storm in 1979. Now having re-formed some 30 years later The Dingoes are set to release a brand new recording, 'Tracks' and take their unique music on the roads 'round Australia this August! / Right To Your Door * Not Worth Fighting For * Rolling Around The Sun * Try Anyway * No Rain, No River * Ribs Of The Land * Blue Sanctuary * Snowblind Moon * Damascus Road * Driving Home

MARK GILLESPIE - ONLY HUMAN (2CD) * Price: $29.95
A deluxe 2CD presentation, with 16 bonus tracks, of Mark Gillespie's 1980 debut album. 'Only Human' is rightly regarded as one of the best debuts ever released in this country and Gillespie as one of our best ever songwriters. Aztec have been working on this release for some time and, as well as a few obstacles along the way, there have been some great discoveries - including a wealth of rare and unreleased material - so much in fact, that they have decided to make the release a double CD. CD1 is the 'Only Human' album with the addition of a rare post-LP 3-track single ('Deep As You' / 'Stronger Together' / 'Falling'). CD2: 'The early years 1977-1979' collects all of Mark's pre-album recordings. 2 tracks from the OZ records compilation Debutantes, the whole of the legendary Black Tape demos (including a lost track that only surfaced in 2009) and the 1979 single 'Comin' Back For More' / 'Alligator Music'. Gillespie is joined by some Australia's finest musicians including; Ross Hannaford (Daddy Cool), Joe Creighton (Black Sorrows, Tim Finn) and Mark Meyer (Stylus, Richard Clapton). The CD's, digitally remastered by Gil Matthews, are packaged in an 8 panel digi-pak, with a 28 page booklet with rare photos and liner notes by Ted Lethborg. Gillespie, from some recent correspondence, gives us some terrific insights with his hilarious, and sometimes controversial, remembrances - as well as track by track comments for the album.
